Frequently Asked Questions

Essential guide to discussing time, schedules, and duration in German.

Asking and telling time in German relies on a few key structures depending on whether you want to know the clock time or a specific schedule.

  • Wie spät ist es? / Wie viel Uhr ist es? – What time is it?
  • Es ist... Uhr. – It is... o'clock (e.g., Es ist drei Uhr. = It is three o'clock).
  • Um wie viel Uhr? – At what time?
  • Um acht Uhr. – At eight o'clock.

Both words relate to time, but they are used in very different contexts in German:

  • die Uhr refers to the clock/watch device itself, or to 'o'clock' when specifying exact time on the clock (e.g., fünf Uhr = 5 o'clock).
  • die Stunde refers to a unit of duration lasting 60 minutes (an hour). For example: Ich habe zwei Stunden gewartet. (I waited for two hours).

Adding an '-s' to times of day converts them from nouns into lower-case adverbs indicating routine or general occurrence:

  • der Morgen (morning, noun) vs. morgens (in the mornings / every morning, adverb).
  • der Abend (evening, noun) vs. abends (in the evenings, adverb).
  • die Nacht (night, noun) vs. nachts (at night / during nights, adverb).

German uses specific adjectives to describe schedules, delays, and temporal attributes:

  • pünktlich – punctual / on time
  • verspätet – delayed / late
  • rechtzeitig – in time / timely
  • kurzfristig – at short notice
  • langfristig – long-term

The noun die Zeit (time) forms dozens of useful compound words by appending it as a suffix:

  • die Freizeit – free time / leisure time
  • die Arbeitszeit – working hours / work time
  • die Schlafenszeit – bedtime
  • die Lebenszeit – lifetime
  • die Vollzeit / Teilzeit – full-time / part-time
