Memory Hooks & Tricks

Boost your vocabulary retention with these clever, association-rich memory tricks tailored for German learners.

das Flugzeug (airplane)

Memory Trick: Think of Flug (flight) plus Zeug (stuff/thing). An airplane is literally a flight-thing!

A flying thing up in the sky.

der Bahnhof (train station)

Memory Trick: Combine Bahn (rail/track) and Hof (courtyard/yard). A train station is a yard full of train tracks.

The track-yard where trains rest.

der Koffer (suitcase)

Memory Trick: Sounds like coffer (a strongbox or trunk used for valuables). You pack your travel items into your Koffer.

Store your treasure in a coffer!

der Stau (traffic jam)

Memory Trick: Sounds like stay or stow. When you hit a Stau on the highway, you have to stay right where you are.

Stuck in a Stau, you stay put!

der Zebrastreifen (crosswalk)

Memory Trick: Combine Zebra and Streifen (stripes). Black and white zebra stripes painted on the street form a crosswalk.

Walk across the zebra's stripes.

die Windschutzscheibe (windshield)

Memory Trick: Break it down: Wind + Schutz (shield/protection) + Scheibe (glass pane). A pane that shields you from wind!
