Frequently Asked Questions

Mastering job titles, gender forms, and professional etiquette in Italian.

In Italian, job titles adapt their ending based on gender, following specific patterns:

  • Words ending in -o change to -a: il commesso becomes la commessa.
  • Words ending in -e often stay the same or change to -essa: il cantante / la cantante, but il dottore / la dottoressa.
  • Words ending in -tore change to -trice: l'attore becomes l'attrice, il pittore becomes la pittrice.
  • Words ending in -ista change only their article: il tassista / la tassista.

You can express your profession in Italian using two different verbs with slightly different structures:

  • Essere + job title (without article): Sono medico or Sono ingegnere (I am a doctor / I am an engineer).
  • Fare + definite article + job title: Faccio il medico or Faccio l'insegnante (I work as a doctor / I work as a teacher).
  • Fare + article is very common in informal everyday conversation.

Jobs ending in -ista use the same form for both masculine and feminine singular, but separate in the plural:

  • Masculine plural ends in -isti: i giurnalisti (male journalists), i tassisti (male taxi drivers).
  • Feminine plural ends in -iste: le giornaliste (female journalists), le tassiste (female taxi drivers).

Italian culture uses formal titles when addressing certain professionals, especially in business or medical contexts:

  • Dottore / Dottoressa: Used for doctors and anyone holding a university degree (Buongiorno, Dottore).
  • Avvocato: Used to address lawyers directly (Grazie, Avvocato).
  • Ingegnere: Used to address engineers in professional settings (Prego, Ingegnere).
  • Maestro / Maestra: Used for primary school teachers and classical musicians.

Yes, modern Italian uses several English terms directly, especially in corporate, service, and tech sectors:

  • Il/la receptionist - hotel or office front desk clerk.
  • Il/la babysitter - child carer.
  • Il/la disc jockey (DJ) - musical entertainer.
  • Lo chef - professional head cook (borrowed from French).
