Memory Hooks & Tricks

Boost your vocabulary retention with these clever, association-rich memory tricks tailored for German learners.

das Auge (eye)

Memory Trick: Think of shouting 'OW!' when you get poked in the eye. 'Auge' sounds like 'OW-guh'!

OW! My Auge (eye) got poked!

das Bein (leg)

Memory Trick: Picture walking along a long straight vine on your legs. 'Bein' sounds like 'bine' (rhymes with line).

Walk down the line on your Bein!

der Kopf (head)

Memory Trick: Imagine a police officer (a COP) wearing his uniform hat directly on his head ('Kopf').

Put the cop's hat on your Kopf!

der Bauch (abdomen / stomach)

Memory Trick: Think of taking a bow from your waist—you bow forward with your belly ('Bauch' sounds like 'bowkh').

Take a bow with your Bauch!

die Lunge (lung)

Memory Trick: Think of doing a deep exercise lunge! Your lungs ('Lunge') work hard to supply oxygen when you perform a lunge.

Breathe deeply into your Lunge while doing a lunge!

der Ellbogen (elbow)

Memory Trick: It sounds almost identical to 'elbow'! The ending '-bogen' means 'bow' or 'bend', so it is your 'elbow bend'.

The bend in your arm is your Ellbogen!
